What does a company video cost?

Two minutes of film looks small. Behind it sit planning, one or more shoot days, and hours in the edit. If you understand that before you ask, you get a quote that fits your goal.

What a company video or brand film costs depends less on its length than on the work behind it: how much concept and script it needs, how many shoot days at how many locations, who is on camera, how much sound, lighting, and crew the shoot requires, and how many versions come out at the end, such as a main film plus short cuts for social media with subtitles.

So plan your budget from the goal. First clarify what the film is for and where it will run, then the scope, and ask for a quote that lists preparation, shoot days, editing, music, and versions separately.

What drives the price of a film

These points decide the effort, roughly in the order they come up:

  • Concept and preparation: an interview film with two employees needs a question list and a shoot plan. A film with a story needs a script, locations, and rehearsals.
  • Shoot days: crew, equipment, and travel are charged per day. Whether one shoot day is enough or it takes three changes the quote more than almost anything else.
  • Locations: filming in your workshop is simpler than three sites in one day or a shoot abroad.
  • People on camera: employees and customers cost no fee but need time and a calm hand on set. Actors or a professional voice-over come on top.
  • Sound, lighting, and equipment: an interview only sounds clean with wireless mics and proper lighting. Drone shots or a second camera add effort.
  • Editing and versions: one shoot often yields a main film, a vertical cut for Instagram, and a short cut for the website. Every version, language, and subtitle track is extra work.
  • Music and rights: licensed music costs money, and the usage rights should state where and for how long you may show the film.

Where the effort in a film comes from

A film comes together in five steps: set the goal, concept and script, shoot days, edit and sound, then the agreed versions.

What we know from our own productions

For the documentary Battle for Change, we planned the shoot and interviews, filmed for around ten days in Kathmandu, and then edited. On a project like that, travel and shoot days make up a large part of the effort long before anyone sits down to edit.

At Eurowings Digital, we joined a production already underway and took on direction and communication with the employees on camera for the shoot day. Concept and edit came from others. It shows you do not have to book everything from one provider. You can buy exactly the part you are missing.

PHM AIX Racing filmed their own race weekends, and we edited the footage within days. For regular content, that model often makes more sense than a big production.

What belongs in a comparable quote

  • Preparation: concept, script or question list, shoot plan
  • Number of shoot days and locations, including travel
  • Crew and equipment, for example camera, sound, lighting, and drone
  • Editing, color grading, sound mix, and music license
  • Every version with format, length, languages, and subtitles
  • Number of revision rounds and delivery time
  • Usage rights: where, for how long, and on which channels the film may run
